Meyer Southern Ltd was called to a residential property in Salisbury, Wiltshire, for the removal and disposal of asbestos floor tiles and the bitumen adhesive holding them down.
The works covered 75m2 of flooring. To reach the tiles under the kitchen, our team also stripped out the existing kitchen, so the homeowners were left with one contractor handling the whole job from units to subfloor.
Floor tiles and bitumen adhesive are two of the most common asbestos-containing materials found in UK homes built before 1999. They are often stable while left alone, but lifting them for a renovation is where the risk starts, so the removal had to be planned around controlling fibre release from the first tile to the last.
Scope of Works
Before any work began, our team confirmed the extent of the tiled area and drew up a method statement and risk assessment for the property, written to current UK asbestos regulations and shaped around the layout of the house.
The scope covered three parts: stripping out the kitchen to expose the floor beneath, lifting 75m2 of asbestos floor tiles, and removing the bitumen adhesive left on the floor once the tiles were up.
Taking out the kitchen ourselves meant the units came out under the same controlled conditions as the asbestos work, with no separate trade disturbing the tiles before our team arrived.
Safe Removal Process
The work areas were sealed and prepared before removal started, with access through the house controlled for the duration of the job.
The tiles were lifted using controlled wet methods to keep dust down and airborne fibre levels to a minimum. Once the tiles were clear, the bitumen adhesive was removed from the floor so the surface was left ready for the next stage of the renovation.
All waste was wrapped, double-bagged and labelled to regulation as it came up, with a record kept of every load.
Compliance and Disposal
All asbestos waste from the project was transported to and disposed of at a licensed waste facility, in line with HSE guidance and UK regulations. On completion, the homeowners received the consignment notes and waste disposal certificates, giving them a full paper trail of what was removed and where it went.
The work areas were cleaned down and a final visual inspection confirmed the floor was safe to hand back.
Project Outcome
The Salisbury project was completed with the kitchen cleared, 75m2 of asbestos floor tiles removed, and the bitumen adhesive taken off the floor beneath. The homeowners now have a clean, asbestos-free floor ready for their new kitchen and flooring to go in, and the documentation to show the work was done properly.
