Meyer Southern Ltd was called to a residential property in Hamble-le-Rice, Southampton (SO31), for the removal and disposal of asbestos-containing ceilings throughout the entire house.

The works covered 86m2 of ceiling across nine areas over two floors, taking in the lounge, kitchen, hall and cloakroom, landing, three bedrooms, the shower room, and the bathroom.

A whole-house removal in a domestic setting brings its own demands. Every room becomes a work area, so sequencing the job, protecting the property, and controlling fibre release from start to finish shaped how the project was planned and run.

Scope of Works

The starting point was the asbestos survey for the property, which our team used to confirm the extent and condition of the ceilings in each room before setting out a room-by-room working order.

A method statement and risk assessment were drawn up for the address, written to current UK asbestos regulations and shaped around the layout of the house and the volume of material coming down.

The full scope covered the lounge at 25m2, the kitchen at 10.5m2, the hall and cloakroom at 7.5m2, the landing at 8m2, the master bedroom at 10m2, the shower room at 3m2, bedroom two at 13m2, bedroom three at 4.5m2, and the bathroom at 4.5m2. That gave a combined total of 86m2 of asbestos-containing ceiling to be removed and disposed of.

Safe Removal Process

Each room was sealed and prepared before removal began. Floors and fixtures were sheeted out, access through the house was controlled, and the team worked to the agreed sequence so no cleared area was recontaminated by work still going on elsewhere.

The ceilings were taken down using controlled, wet removal methods to suppress dust and keep airborne fibre levels to a minimum. As material came down in each room, it was wrapped, double-bagged, and labelled to regulation, then set aside for collection with a full record kept of every load.

No waste left the property without the correct documentation in place.

Compliance and Disposal

All asbestos waste from the project was transported to and disposed of at a licensed facility, in full compliance with UK legislation. On completion, the consignment notes and waste disposal certificates were handed to the property owner, giving them a complete paper trail covering what was removed, when, and where it went.

Each room was cleaned down once the ceilings were out, and a final visual inspection confirmed every area was safe to hand back.

Project Outcome

The Hamble-le-Rice project was completed on schedule, with all nine areas handed back clean, clear, and ready for the ceilings to be reinstated. A full-house removal is a disruptive job for any homeowner, and careful planning kept that disruption as short as it could be. It is the standard of work that keeps homeowners and landlords across Southampton and the wider Hampshire area coming back to Meyer Southern.
