Meyer Southern Ltd was brought in to remove and dispose of the asbestos garage roofs from a block of four garages on Normandy Road, Stamshaw, Portsmouth.
Asbestos cement sheeting was a common roofing material on garages built before 2000. It is generally stable while intact, but it becomes brittle with age and weathering, and any repair, replacement or demolition means the sheets need to come off under controlled conditions.
Scope of Works
The job covered the roofs on all four garages in the block. Our team assessed the site before work started and prepared a method statement and risk assessment for the job, written to current UK asbestos regulations.
With four garages sharing one block, the work was planned so each roof could be stripped in turn while keeping the surrounding area safe for neighbours and anyone passing by.
Safe Removal Process
The work area was set up and secured before any sheets came off. The sheets were dampened to keep dust down and limit fibre release, then the fixings were removed and each sheet was lowered down whole rather than broken up.
Every sheet was wrapped and labelled to regulation as it came down, keeping the waste contained from roof to vehicle.
Compliance and Disposal
All asbestos waste was taken to a licensed waste facility and disposed of in line with HSE guidance and UK regulations. The client received the consignment notes and waste disposal certificates on completion, recording exactly what was removed and where it went.
Once the roofs were off, the site was cleaned down and a final visual inspection confirmed the area was safe to hand back.
Project Outcome
All four garages were handed back with the old asbestos roofs removed, ready for new roofing to go on. The client now has the block clear of asbestos roofing, with the paperwork to show it was removed and disposed of correctly.
