A recent project saw Meyer Southern Ltd called to a property on Mansion Road in Freemantle, Southampton, where an asbestos cement slate roof required full removal.
The job covered approximately 70m2 of slate tiling fixed across the main roof structure.
From start to finish, protecting the property owner, the neighbouring buildings and the wider local environment shaped how each phase of the works was planned and carried out.
Scope of Works
The initial stage involved a thorough review of the existing asbestos survey provided by the client. From that, our team mapped out the sequencing of works, identified safe access points, and confirmed the containment measures needed for the roof. A detailed method statement and risk assessment were then produced, drawn up against current UK asbestos legislation and tailored to the specific layout of the building.
Roof areas earmarked for removal totalled around 70m2 of bonded asbestos cement slate. Our trained operatives carried out the strip-out using controlled techniques designed for fragile cement-based materials, with each tile lifted rather than broken to keep fibre release to a minimum.
Before any disturbance took place, edge protection, ground-level exclusion zones, and dust suppression measures were put in place, with strict site discipline observed throughout.
Safe Removal Process
Site preparation came first. Scaffolding was erected to allow safe working at height, the surrounding ground was sheeted out, and warning notices were positioned at every access route to clearly mark the working zone. Pedestrian and vehicle controls were also set up so nobody could stray into the live area during removal.
Tiles were hand-stripped using slow, controlled methods rather than mechanical breaking, which kept dust levels suppressed and limited any airborne fibre release. Once each section was down, slates were wrapped, double-bagged and labelled in line with regulations before being booked into a licensed asbestos waste facility.
Nothing left the site without complete documentation accompanying it.
Compliance and Disposal
All transport and disposal of asbestos waste was handled in full accordance with UK legislation. Once the works were signed off, consignment notes and waste disposal certificates were issued directly to the property owner, giving them a complete audit trail of everything that was carried out.
After the removal, the roof area and surrounding ground were thoroughly cleaned down, with a final visual inspection carried out to confirm the site was safe to release. The client was then free to move forward with their re-roofing programme without delay.
